Shambles, York by Cellarvee Shambles, York by Cellarvee
Set in Shambles, the most well known tourist street in York.

This piece was inspired by the ‘Cat Trail’ because this is where the York Cat Trail starts from. This is a set walk around the city centre, with the object of finding all 16 cats (carvings or statues) located around the route.

There is a cat statue here somewhere. Can you spot it?

Full details of the Cat Trail can be found at

I don't know if I'm qualified to give a critique, as I am an amateur beginner, and you are so wonderfully gifted, but I'll try. I love the crowded feel of this painting, it seems alive and filled with action because of all the people. Your attention to detail as usual is superb, I love the way you did the words on the signs. The one shutter (I assume it's a shutter) looks a little bit like a window on the sky and rather detached. At first I thought there was a building there, when I figured out it was the sky, and that must be an open shutter. It's the only thing I found that looked a bit "off." But that's just my opinion, take it with a BIG grain of salt. Your ability to twist your images yet retain their original intention is just amazing to me. Your painting has great depth, and an endless supply of interesting material. As always, you've painted a wonderful picture and I intend to keep it!

Another fabulous painting. I just love your people - they are so animated, yet overall your paintings, despite their busy-ness and detail, have a lovely laid-back quality that is immediately smile-inducing. Plus they are engaging because they draw the viewer in to see past the main characters to a kind of second layer of interesting things (in other paintings the hen and eggs, the mouse and so on). In this one, there is not only the signs, the cat and the open shutter, but it almost seems to me that the buildings are as alive as the people, with movement of their own. And, by the lamp, could that be an eye? And even if it wasn't intended to be, it still seems to me that the buildings are looking at the people, just as the people are looking at the buildings. Nice interplay.

Hello again my friend. Wow, you really have looked closely into this one. It is one of the few pieces that do not contain one of my usual unreal or improbable elements. By the time I reached this stage of completion I had decided it was busy enough without adding anything else. I am so pleased you like it and thanks for your great comments. :tea::-)

Amazing piece, it is so fantastic.

The cat is above the ice cream sign, on the right?

Thank you, and yes you spotted the cat statue.:-) I was tempted to hide lots of them around this picture, but decided it would have become too cluttered. :evillaugh:

Maybe you can still do that, in a slightly different one. Either way, you have a talent that is so amazing, it wouldn't matter if you do at some stage or not.

I love York, has been many years since I was there, but York is one of the places I really want to go back to.

Your work has really astounded me today, just so special and unusual....very unique. Gorgeous work. :-)

Hey, talent is all relative. I still see myself as a beginner and I am in awe of some of the real artists on this site. I am very happy to receive such encouraging comments. Thank you. :-)

We each see work from others here and elsewhere, where we are in awe, I felt that of your work I have to say and have done of many others' too. I too get some fantastic comments and it is so lovely when people appreciate it isn't it, but it never stops from being amazed with what else is out there. I love art so much, so I am always looking.

You do not come across as a beginner in any shape or form of the word. ;-) Be very proud.

Aww thank you.

I do get some very nice positive feedback, which is nice.

My gallery isn't busy with views, but I know people appreciate my work and that's good enough for me. It is nice when they message me with the good things they say.

Thank you for what you said about my flower shots. :-) Glad you like those ones.
Not long got back in to photographing flowers - used to all the time in years previously. The last few years I have done mostly landscape/Architecture.

I certainly recognise the York bit! Love the brightness of it all and the way you have combined lots of different things, and the pee pot really appeals to my sense of humour - although I would not have been able to resist putting the other character right below it. :evillaugh:

:rofl:yeah the pee pot was an afterthought by that time already had the first character in there and yeah, totally - sooo much more funnier if the other one was below - your next painting of Ye Olde Jorvik perhaps hahahaha
